Myanmar
The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia, bordered by China to the north and east, Laos and Thailand to the east, the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal to the south, and Bangladesh and India to the west. The country covers a total area of 676,578 square kilometers (261,218 square miles) and is geographically divided into Lower Myanmar (coastal region) and Upper Myanmar (interior region).
Climate
Myanmar is a year-round travel destination. The hilly regions in the north and northeast enjoy cool, temperate weather, while the central regions receive very little rainfall, even during the rainy season.
Population
As of 2024, Myanmar has an estimated population of 55 million people (a decrease from previous estimates of 60 million). The major ethnic groups include Bamar, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, and Shan.
Religion
More than 80% of the population practices Theravada Buddhism, while the rest follow Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and animism.
Language
The official language is Burmese (Myanmar language). Ethnic minorities speak their native languages, including Chin, Kachin, Kayin, and Shan, among others. Additionally, some communities speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Hindustani, and Urdu, particularly among Chinese and Indian immigrants. English is also commonly used, as Myanmar was once a British colony.
Culture
Myanmar lies at the crossroads of two great civilizations—China and India. However, its culture is distinct, blending influences from both while maintaining unique Myanmar traditions. Buddhism plays a central role in daily life, shaping values such as strong family ties, respect for elders, reverence for religion, and simple, traditional dress. Myanmar people are known for their hospitality and resilience even in difficult circumstances.
Currency
The official currency is the Kyat (MMK), which is subdivided into 100 pyas. Kyat banknotes are issued in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000. Older notes, such as 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 45, 50, and 90 Kyats, are rarely in circulation.
